College-Level Spanish 100

College-Level Spanish 100 is a 12-week undergraduate-level course for students with no background in Spanish to communicate through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This open course will create and provide resources reusable under creative commons standards. Registration for the course is available immediately, and the course will begin January 21 and run through April 8. Students will be expected to dedicate 6 hours per week, for a total of 72 hours. Although the course cannot provide college credit from an accredited university, capable students will learn the material of a first-year college class, and will receive a letter grade. The course will be a combination of recorded video instruction, conversation practice with other students, and homework assignments given and evaluated through the integrated Instreamia learning platform. In these assignments, students will practice listening recognition, vocabulary understanding, context comprehension, and grammar usage.

Description Open University Spanish I is a 12 week 3-credit course for students with no background in Spanish to communicate through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This open course will create and provide resources reusable under creative commons standards. Registration for the course is available immediately, and the course will begin January 21 and run through April 8. Students will be expected to dedicate 6 hours per week, for a total of 72 hours. Assessment criteria for the determination of each student’s letter grade will be 12 homework assignments, conversation participation, 6 quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. The course materials are included with the course, which will take advantage of the following technologies: -Instreamia Integrated Learning Platform -Google hangouts After completing this course, students will be prepared with the basic skills of speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish in order to communicate with native speakers. The basic grammar principles, including verb conjugations, article usage, and pronoun usage will be introduced. Students will learn the culture of Spanish-speaking countries through videos and conversations. Students will be prepared for second-year college level programs if they receive a satisfactory grade in this course. Learners of this course will learn from interactive exercises based on real native content through social media and online video. Additionally, native Spanish speakers and Spanish professors will be invited to guest lecture.
