Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to: define and structure the counseling situation; identify the elements of effective helping; conduct initial, fact-finding interviews for a mental-status examination; use the Egan model of helping and problem-solving; understand the effective use of self in the counseling process; understand Roger’s theory of counseling, demonstrate specific skills which facilitate good communication and address problematic clients who are hostile and resistant to counseling.
